- Only in the region of issueThe apostille is affixed only by the civil registry authority of the region where the record was made, that is, where the certificate was issued. If the document was issued in another region, the apostille is obtained there: in person, through a relative or representative, or by post or through Gosuslugi where the region offers it. If you ask us to handle the submission, no power of attorney is needed: a scan of the main passport page is enough.

If the certificate is laminated
If the certificate is laminated, torn, water-damaged or issued on a Soviet form, obtain a duplicate from the civil registry office (usually ready within a day if you apply in person)

If the certificate was issued in the USSR in a union republic other than the RSFSR, a Russian civil registry office will not apostille it: you have to approach the archive or registry of the successor state

Check that the spelling of names and the dates match your international passport
If a notarised translation is also planned, the apostille is usually obtained before the translation. Check the order with your translator.

What an apostille on a birth certificate looks like
The form is the same for every country and authority: a square stamp with ten numbered fields and a French heading. It is placed on the document itself or on a separate sheet attached to it (Article 4 of the Hague Convention). Hover over a field to see what goes in it.
The form of the stamp is set out in the annex to the 1961 Hague Convention and is the same in every contracting state. The heading in French is compulsory; the other captions may be repeated in the language of the country. The square measures at least 9 centimetres on each side.
